K is for the Knowing Isles

In the A to Z  Challenge I will be describing parts of my fictional world I am starting to use for Roleplaying games. Most of this information is not known by my players, not to hide it from them, but because I think tons about a location that I won’t force them to sit through during gaming sessions.

The Knowing Isles are home to the Towers of Howling Winds which are comprised of series of great magical communication artifacts, and are the reason the Isles have their name. It is run, protected and maintained by the Order of Bamboo.

Knowing Isles

Known for being one of the two primary centers for the Order of Bamboo.

KnowingIslesGovernment and Society: The Half-elven democracy is comprised of several sectors in society. First are the citizens who have priveleges to vote, second are members of the order of bamboo who give up their voting priveleges as a conflict of interest, and third are the bonded servants and foreigners.

Servants are made servants in one of two ways. First as a debt to be paied to society, for which they must spend a number of years in servitude. Second they may voluntarially become servants for their life, this is done with dedication to their master’s household. In return for their service masters are bound by laws on how to treat servants and if they are found in violation of them, they are rendered servants themselves with a maximum sentance of 24 years in servitude.

Architecture: Due to the small space on the islands, the architeture is made of round towers with conical thatched roofs and side rooms and awnings.

Food, Goods, Imports and Exports: Vegetables and fish are the common stable of the diet. The havesting of sea salt is one of the primary exports along with the jobs of the order of Bamboo. Much fruit, leather and other preserved foods are imported onto the main island.

Of particular note on the island are the elaborate tapastries and woven blankets with exquisite detailing.

Culture, Clothing and Holidays: The citizens wear wool pants and tunics, in off white and browns. The servants wear black in assymetrical tunics with small border decorations.

A popular legend talks of a magical bag that could hold the entire nation in it’s pocket, to protect it from danger.

They community is known for having a good number of seasonal festivals, most of which are memorials of long lost historical events.

The Order of Bamboo and the Towers of Howling Wind

The Order of Bamboo’s headquarters are within and around the five towers of the Howling Wind. The towers are able to act as a central hub that connects the many towers of wispering wind, which act as a communication network of verbal messages. The towers had additional capabilites but have gone haywire with the destruction. So only the critical communication parts are in use and the other ares of the towers off-limits except to the researchers trying to get things under control. It is especially difficult as the towers themselves seem to rearrange some of the rooms or doors at the bottom floor lead to the top of another tower.
